Definition A velocity is a vector quantity. "Upward" indicates a vector component which is positive when directed upward (negative downward). Upward air velocity is the vertical component of the 3D air velocity vector.

Note I am aware that 'vertical velocity' is already in the vocabulary, but for consistency , we would prefer if these 3 wind components (northward wind, eastward wind and upward air velocity) from the sonic anemometer come all from sf-conventions
